Advanced Textile Testing and Industry Terminology

Advanced Textile Testing: HVI, AFIS & Industry Glossary.

Q: What is HVI (High Volume Instrument)?
A: HVI is used for testing various fiber properties. It measures:
- Fiber Length
- Fiber Strength
- Micronaire (Fineness/Maturity)
- Color
- Trash Content
Q: What is AFIS (Advanced Fiber Information System)?
A: AFIS is an instrument used to test:
- Neps: The number and size of neps.
- Seed Coat Neps: Neps originating from the seed.
- Fiber Length Distribution: Detailed analysis of fiber lengths.

Q: What is the difference between Ne and Denier?
A:
- Ne (English Count): An indirect system where the higher the number, the finer the yarn.
- Denier: A direct system where the higher the number, the coarser the yarn. (Used primarily for synthetic filaments like Polyester and Nylon).
Q: What is Staple Length?
A: It is the average length of the fibers in a bale of cotton. Long-staple cotton is generally used for making fine and strong yarns.
Q: Glossary of Common Textile Terms
- AQL (Acceptable Quality Level): A standard used for inspection and quality control.
- BCIRA: British Cotton Industry Research Association.
- Drafting: The process of reducing the thickness of a sliver or roving by passing it through rollers.
- Twist Multiplier (TM): A factor used to determine the amount of twist to be given to a yarn of a certain count.
- Lea Strength: The force required to break a lea (120 yards) of yarn.
- CSP (Count Strength Product): The product of yarn count and lea strength. It is the most common measure of yarn quality in a spinning mill.

Q: What are the popular sizes of TC/CVC Yarn?
A:
- Most Popular: 10s, 14s, 16s, 20s, 21s, 32s, 45s and 60s.
- Less Popular: 12s, 13s, 24s, 30s, 33s and 42s.
